Balance Wheel of Life

Business man balancing on unicycle.

This easy exercise using a wheel of life is great for finding balance in life. It reveals parts of your life that need more tender loving care.

What does a wheel of life exercise have to do with meditation?

In every moment you have two choices:

a)To choose for full present moment awareness which keeps you alert and balanced; or

b)To choose for EGO unconsciousness which traps your attention in the past or the future.

Meditation is the key to fine tuning your present moment awareness.

Life is meant to flow easily and smoothly without struggling.

The key to balance work and personal life is to first establish which parts of your life cause you the most grief.

How comfortable are you with saying No to an over-demanding boss, or spouse, or your kids?

Or, another way of looking at it is to ask yourself, Where am I compromising my integrity?

Once you discover what parts of your life you are neglecting, with this easy exercise, you can begin to bring your life back into balance.

By making good choices you will feel less uptight and more calm and peaceful.

Go ahead and take the first step toward developing your life balancing skills.

How to approach the Wheel of Life exercise

Bring your conscious awareness into the present moment so that your ego doesn't get in your way.

Begin with the innocence of a child. Expect nothing, judge nothing. Even if you think you know, go ahead and play with it.

Take nothing seriously. You may find a few surprises, but it doesn't matter if you don't. The results will present a great starting point for bringing order into your life.

Instructions:

See the pie chart below. The entire wheel represents perfect balance. Each section of the pie chart represents one aspect of your life. See the examples on left side of illustration.

The pie is divided into sixteen segments for you to label with areas of your life. Use as many or as few as you wish, add to the list if something is missing.

On a blank piece of paper, draw your own wheel and label the sections. Now you see your life in perfect balance.

On a scale of 0 to 10 rate your level of satisfaction with each aspect of your life.

Consider the center of the wheel as 0 and the outer rim as 10. Now draw a horizontal line across each section of the pie at the point you estimate as being closest to your rating.

For example, are you 50% satisfied with where you live now? Give it a 5. Then in the section called "physical environment", draw a line across the section about half way between 0 and 10. See how it's done in the illustration below on the wheel of life that is off balance.

When each section has been rated, boldly take a red marker and draw an inner circle connecting the horizontal lines.

There you have it. That is what your life looks like today.
