Time Management Blues Gotcha Down?
Effective time management is easier with meditation. It calms you down, clears your mind, and improves your ability to focus on your task at hand.
Until about 10 years ago, to ask me to prioritize activities, commit to a set of goals, and actually see the plan through to completion, was like asking me to shoot myself in the head. Feeling overwhelmed would have been a gross understatement. Yes, I was a drama queen. The benefits of meditation helped me to see the errors of my ways. Specifically, I learned how to observe self-limiting and self-destructive thoughts and move beyond them to my source of inner wisdom. Trying to conform to conventional methods of time management was like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Ugh!
Meditating clears your mind… A clear mind that functions directly from the stillness within is pure undistorted creativity. The most effective time management is a highly creative endeavor that requires your ability to organize activities and visualize your desired results. A confused and disturbed mind creates distorted thinking. This 10 minute exercise will demonstrate how easy it is to watch your thoughts, slow them down and
quiet your busy mind.
Improved ability to focus on task at hand… The power of the ego’s
negative self talk
to distract you from what you are doing can be daunting. It renders you unconscious with thoughts like: this will never work, I’ve failed before, so I’ll fail again; at this rate, I’ll never reach my weekly quota; I’d be better off knocking on doors than sitting here making a plan to do it. Good news. The only power the ego has over you is the power you give it. The best way I know of dealing with the ego is to: Acknowledge it. When a self-defeating thought comes into your awareness, easily and gently watch it. Do not resist it with a defensive thought. It’s easy if you master the art of becoming the observer of your thoughts as described above. Accept it. When you notice a negative thought in your mind, just watch it with gentle, alert attention. Allow it to move, or dissolve naturally. Remember, you are not your thoughts...Once you stop believing them, you'll laugh at them.
Take nothing seriously. Except, maybe your peace of mind – just kidding! There is nothing more important than your peace of mind, but that is only possible when you let go of your beliefs and judgments and your need to be right.
Day Planners I use a simple day planner - one page per day - with lots of room for revising my schedule and making notes. Having become comfortable with following my intuition, I simply readjust my plan as my inner wisdom guides me. It doesn’t matter which time management tools you use; if you prepare yourself mentally and emotionally, your efforts will be highly rewarded.
