The Ego Buster Exercise
Improve Your Time Management Skills

Mind storm attack

This easy exercise, the Ego Buster, will reveal emotional blocks that prevent you from effective time management activities.

It will help you to see what is stopping you from sticking to your intended plans.

You may already be aware of some of those issues, but often it is those deeply embedded in your psyche that really block your progress.

For example, while you are scheduling activities in your day timer, you may have a thought like, What's the use of this when I never stick to the plan anyway?

When your false ego is threatened by a positive activity, it creates a mind storm of self-limiting thoughts to stop you in your tracks.

This ego buster will help you identify what activities arouse your ego.

It is OK, if emotional energy is stirred up while you are planning and scheduling.

Just stop and bring your awareness into the present moment.

Accept it, and make a note of what is bothering you.

Warning: Take nothing seriously as you read this information and play with the exercises.

At any time you feel like quitting, bring your awareness into the present moment, be still, and then proceed with the exercise.

The 7 Step Ego Buster Exercise

  1. Beginning on Sunday evening, make a list of activities you wish to accomplish on Monday. Go ahead and plan for the entire 7 days if you wish.

  2. Monday evening check off activities you accomplished and move the rest forward to Tuesday’s list, or to whichever day makes most sense. (For easy reviewing use red ink for uncompleted items)

  3. Continue this exercise until the following Sunday evening.

  4. Go back to Tuesday’s list and copy all of your uncompleted (red) items from each day onto a new list.

  5. Review your list and look for clues to solving your mysterious blocks to success.
What is the nature of each item on your list?
What is the common thread running through all the items?

  6. Now, go back to your daily lists and look for clues among the activities that you accomplished. This list may reveal inherent strengths and talents.
What is the nature of each item on your list?
What is the common thread running through all the items?

  7. After reviewing your results, can you see your show stoppers? If not, ask a friend to help you. An objective pair of eyes can often detect clues that you can’t see.

What to do about your findings

Now that you know your areas of highest resistance, the best way to deal with them is to acknowledge, accept them and surrender them to the Universe.

If you are at the office, and a deadline for an unpleasant project is closing in on you, take a few moments to bring your awareness into the present moment.

Relax and calm yourself down using your meditation techniques and trust your inner wisdom to guide you to your highest and best solutions.

If you have a thought that you don't have time to even do that, take a break and to go to the bathroom - you can meditate for a few minutes in the privacy of a cubicle.

Trust that in those few minutes of peace of mind you will be shown the best way to proceed.
